This piece was created for a call to artists by Juniper Rag Magazine regarding the overturning of Roe v. Wade and womens rights. It was made in collaboration with Jim Curran.

If I Must Die (Handala)

Palestinian writer and professor Refaat Alareer was killed in an airstrike by the Israeli military on Dec. 6th, 2023. Shortly before he was killed, Refaat wrote his poem “If I must Die… ” Since then, his poem has been shared and translated into dozens of languages including Spanish, Tamil, Urdu & Yiddish.

 

Following Refaat’s instructions in the poem, I created a kite with his poem written in English & Arabic on each side.I attached the kite to an iconic symbol or Palestinian Resistance, the child Handala, which was created by a Palestinian cartoonist Naji Al-Ali in 1969. Naji was assassinated in England in 1987. Handala is the symbol of Palestinian struggle and resistance to the Israeli Occupation to this day. This piece links the ongoing Nakba “catastrophe” from 1948 to the present day.
